Motorcycle Accident Claims London

The UK has one of the best road safety records anywhere in the world, but despite this fact we are in no position to be complacent here in the capital.

In 2012 London was named as the UK’s biggest accident hotspot for motorcyclists, with nearly 22 per cent of all bikers’ accidents occuring here.

The fact is, there is never an end to what can be done to prevent deaths and serious injuries. This is especially so when those accidents effect motorcycle riders.

And February 2014 research from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) suggests that you have every reason to be suspicious as a motorbike rider surrounded by motorists.

The study of nearly 1,500 drivers, shows that, as you might suspect, a lot of them simply are not paying full attention to the road.

According to the research, half of all 18 to 24 year-olds said they do not concentrate 100 per cent of the time when they are on the road.

In terms of concentration, drivers seem to improve as they gain experience and maturity. The majority (73 per cent) of those aged over 65 responded that they were concentrating fully every time they drove.

Simon Best, chief executive of the IAM, said: “These results reconfirm stereotypes surrounding younger drivers and the ease with which they can be distracted away from staying safe.”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the congested nature of the capital’s roads and the time pressures on travellers generally, drivers in London are the most likely to be distracted while on the road. Nearly half of those questioned (47 per cent) said they did not apply 100 per cent concentration to their driving.

The most common reason given for failing to concentrate was daydreaming, with 24 per cent of those interviewed identifying it as the key to their lost concentration.

Other drivers (22 per cent) claimed stress was causing them to lose focus, and 21 per cent admitted that they were distracted thinking about what they would do when they reached their destination. The same number were preoccupied with ‘thoughts surrounding personal relationships, family and friends’.

The thing that is most concerning about this IAM study is that it underlines quite emphatically that there is little that you can do to anticipate the reality of other road users losing their focus – and the consequences can be serious.

“Simply not concentrating is a key cause of crashes, yet it is not borne out in statistics because drivers rarely admit to it in police reports or on insurance forms,” Mr Best said.

As a victim yourself or a loved one of a recent motorbike accident victim you will be suffering the serious and traumatic consequences of your accident – perhaps as a consequence of another driver’s loss of focus.

However, though the path to putting your life back together after a serious motorbike accident is seldom easy and often extremely arduous and distressing. But please take our reassurance that you are not on your own.

If your motorbike accident was someone else’s fault, you may be eligible for a substantial compensation thanks to the current personal injury legislation here in the UK.

Motorcycle Accidents in London

According to the most recent Government Statistics motorcyclists account for 19% of all traffic fatalities despite the reality that motorbike riders represent just 1 per cent of the UK’s road users.

There were 362 motorcycle users killed in 2011, a 10% decline on 2010 figures. These are numbers in line with the general trend for motorcycle fatalities.

However though motorcycle traffic increased by just under 1% (0.9%) in 2011, the total for motorbike rider accidents grew by 8% to 20,150 over the course of the year.

And although the number of rider fatalities is falling (down 11% in 2011 on the previous four year’s average), the number of motorbike riders reported as seriously injured increased by 10% to 5,247. And it is the growing toll of biker casualties that is the most concerning trend that can be extracted from the latest published figures from The Department of Transport.

One of the best ways you can play your part to improve road safety for fellow motorcyclists in the future is to take out your own personal injury case against those responsible for your accident. Consider it to be an act of solidarity because penalising and calling the guilty to account is the best way to make sure accidents like yours are prevented in the future.

Low visibility is a key contributor to deciding the severity of crash victims’ injuries. An equally important factor is the indisputable lack of physical protection that motorbikes offer their riders. This exposure is exaggerated when travelling at high speeds and in variable or dangerous road conditions. It is estimated that for every mile of travel, motorcyclists carry a 34-fold greater chance of dying than every other category of road user.
